National Food Security Mission (NFSM)

National Food Security Mission (NFSM), was launched in October 2007 to  increase production and productivity of rice, wheat and pulses by 10  million tonnes, 8 million tonnes, and 2 million tonnes respectively by the end  of the XIth Five Year Plan (viz. March 2012) on a sustainable basis so as to  ensure food security of the country. 

The Mission is being continued during XIIth Five Year Plan (2012-17) with  new targets of additional production of food grains of 25 million tonnes of  food grains comprising of 10 million tonnes rice, 8 million tonnes of wheat,  4 million tonnes of pulses and 3 million tonnes of coarse cereals by the end  of XIIth Five Year Plan. 

The National Food Security Mission (NFSM) during the XIIth Five Year Plan will have five components: (1) NFSM- Rice, (2) NFSM- Wheat, (3)  NFSM- Pulses, (4) NFSM- Coarse cereals and (5) NFSM- Commercial  crops. 

During the XIth Plan period the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) was  implemented in 482 districts of 19 States comprising of 144 districts under Rice in 16 States, 142 districts under Wheat in 9 States and 468 districts  under Pulses in 16 States. 

In XIIth Five Year Plan NFSM-Rice, NFSM-Wheat, NFSM-Pulses and  NFSM-Coarse Cereals will be implemented in 199 districts in 24 States, 119  districts in 11 States, 557 districts in 23 States and 182 districts in 27 States,  respectively.
