National Bamboo Mission (NBM)

National Bamboo Mission was launched in 2006-07 as a Centrally  Sponsored Scheme to promote the growth of bamboo sector. The  programmes address four major areas of bamboo development as follows: 

(1) Research and Development, (2) Plantation Development, (3) Handicrafts  Development and (4) Marketing. National Bamboo Mission renamed as  National Agro-Forestry and Bamboo Mission (NABM) in July 2017.

Objectives

  1. To promote the growth of the bamboo sector through as an area based regionally differentiated strategy;
  2. To increase the coverage of area under bamboo in potential areas, with improved varieties to enhance yields;
  3. To promote marketing of bamboo and bamboo based handicrafts;
  4. To establish convergence and synergy among stake-holders for the development of bamboo;
  5. To promote, develop and disseminate technologies through a seamless blend of traditional wisdom and modern scientific knowledge.
  6. To generate employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled persons, especially unemployed youths.

Benefits of National Bamboo Mission

  1. The scheme would, directly and indirectly, benefit the farmers, local artisans, and associated people engaged in the bamboo sector, inclusive of the associated industries.
  2. The scheme proposes to bring about one lakh hectares under plantation. Thereby benefiting close to one lakh farmers directly, in terms of the plantation.
  3. The scheme would help in cutting down on the import of bamboo products and in enhancing the income of the farmers.
  4. It creates a complete value chain for the growth of the bamboo sector.
