Characteristics of Important Indigenous Goat Breed 
1. Jamunapari
I. Jamunapari breeds are found mainly in the state of Uttar Pradesh (Etawah). 

II. They are beard in both sexes; have tuft of long hairs in the buttocks.

III. It is largest and most elegant of the long-legged goats of India.

IV. It has pronounced Roman nose having a tuft of hair which results in parrot mouth appearance.

V. Its coat colour is white with tan or black markings at neck and ears

VI. Weight of adult male 75 – 80 kg & Weight of adult female 45 – 60 kg.

VII. Age at first kidding is 22 – 25 months.

VIII. Average yield of milk is 280 kg (2-3 liter / day) up-to 274 days.

IX. The fat content of the milk ranges between 3 to 3.5%.

X. The Jamunapari goats have been used for evolving the famous Anglo-Nubian breed of goats in England.

XI. It is also known as poor man’s cow.

XII. It gives two kids in one time in one year.

2. Barbari
I. This is short haired and erect-horned goat popular in urban areas of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Gurgaon, Karnal, Panipat and Rohtak in Haryana state.II. This goat is also know as City goat. 

III. The color of this breed is white with light brown patches.

IV. Weight of adult male goat 40 – 50 kg & Weight of adult female 35-40 kg.

V. Average yield of milk is 125 kg (1.5 liter / day) up-to 225 days with 5% fat.

VI.They will give, 2 to 3 kids in parturition.

VII. They are prolific breeder and kid twice in 12-15 months.

3. Beetal
I. It is are found mainly in the state of Syalkut amritsar gurudaspur Punjab. II. Beetal grown mainly for the purpose of milk and meat. 

III. Generally smaller than the breed of Jamunapari..

IV. Weight of adult male goat 50-70 kg & Weight of adult female 40 – 50 kg.

V. Males usually possess beard.

VI. Age on first kidding 20-22 months.

VII. Average lactation yield – 150 kg. upto 287 day (1.5-2 kg/day) with 4.5 fat %.

VIII. This breed is similar to jamunapari.

4.Sirohi
I. It is mainly found in Rajsthan state. II. Coat colour is brown, white, and admixture of colours in typical patches, hair coarse and short. 

III. Average body weight of buck is 50 and doe is 23 kg.

IV. Average birth weight is 2.0 kg. 

V. Kidding is once a year, twins are common.

VI. Average age at first kidding is 19 months.

5.Tellicherry
I. Tellicherry breed is also called as malabari breed. II. It is found mostly in the state of Kerala. 

III. It is grown mostly for the purpose of meat.

IV. Weight of adult male goat 40-50 kg & Weight of adult female 30 – 40 kg.

VI. Generally seen in white, purple and black colors.

VII. They can give two to three kids in a parturition.

6. Chegu
I. It is mainly found in Kangra valley of Himachal pradesh. 

II. Coat colour is predominantly white but greyish red and mixed colours are also seen. 

III. Average buck live weight of buck is 39 kg and doe is 26 kg.

IV. Have long hair with under coat of delicate fibre below (cashmere or pashm).

V. This breed is useful for Pashmina production.

VI. Average Pashmina production 120 gm / Year & Wool production 500-700 gm / year.

VII. Kidding is once a year and mostly single.

VIII. Horns are bent upward, backward and outward with one or more twists.

IX. Average birth weight is 2.0 kg.

X. Used for draught (pack) to carry salt and small loads.

7. Black Bengal
I. It is mainly found in West Bangal & Aasam. II. Coat colour is predominantly black, brown/grey and white with soft, glossy and short hairs. 

III. It has long horns 7-10 cm.

IV. This breed is best for meat purpose.

V. Average live weight of buck is 15 kg and doe is 12 kg.

VI. Most prolific among the Indian breeds.

VII. Multiple births are common – two, three or four kids are born at a time. (Highest no of kids)

VIII. Average age at first kidding is 14-16 months.

IX. Its skin is in great demand for high quality shoe-making.

8. Osmanabadi
I. Coat colour is predominantly black; white, brown and spotted occur. 

II. Kidding is once a year. 

III. Average age at first kidding 19-20 months.

IV. Good yielders produce milk up to 3.5 kg a day.

V. Average milk yield 170-180 kg per lactation.

VI. It has good quality meat.

9. Changthangi
I. It is mostly found in Changthangi, laddakh. II. Predominantly white and the rest are brown, grey and black. Undercoat white/grey; yields warm delicate fibre – pashmina (cashmere, pashm). 

III. Average age at first kidding is 20 months.. 

10. Kashmiri
I. This breed is also known as Pashmina. 

II. It is mostly found in J & K. 

III. Hard skin having 4-6 inches hairs.

IV. Smooth hairs below the hairs which is used for shawl making.

V. This breed is useful for Pashmina production.

VI. Average Pashmina production 50-200 gm /Year (Once in year combing in may june)  & Wool production 1-1.5 kg / year.

VI. Age on first calving 22 month.

11.Gaddi
I. It is mostly found in kangra shimla, Himachal pradesh.II. It is similar to Chengu breed. III. Long siny hairs with length 17-19 cm. 

IV. It has long hairs downward.

1. Sannen
I. Native of Sannen valley of Switzerland noted for its consistency and high production. 

II. The body color is white or light cream. The face may be slightly dished and the ears point upward and forward. 

III. It is also known as Queen of milk in world.

IV. Both sexes are normally polled but sometimes horns do appear.

V. Weight of male (buck) 95 kg & female 65 kg.

VI. Average milk yield 3-4 liter per day with milk fat 3 – 5%

2. Toggenberg
I. It is originated in the Toggenberg valley in north Switzerland. II. Skin is very soft and pliable. 

III. Usually both male and female are hornless.

IV. The adult doe weights 65 kg or more and the bucks more than 80 kg.

V. Average milk fat percentage 3-4 %

VI. Average milk production is 5.5 kg per day.

3. Alpine
I. This breed was originated in Alps mountains of French. II. Swiss and Rock Alpine breeds.  

III. No distinct color has been established.

IV. Average milk yield is 2 – 3 kg/day with buffer fat of 3 -4%.

4. Angora
I. Originated in Turkey or Asia minor (China).  

II. It produces a superior quality fibre called mohair. 

III. Average production of Mohair 2 kg per goat per year.

IV. Average milk yield is 1.5-2 liter/day .

5. Nubian
I. Originated in Nubia of North eastern Africa. Also found in Ethiopia and Egypt.II. This breed along with Jamunapari of India together with native breeds of U.K. formed the cross bred Anglo Nubian breed of goat. III. It is a long legged and hardy animal.
6. Anglo Nubian
I. It is originated from nubia africa.II. Anglo Nubian is known as the Jersey cow of the goat world. III. It is a big animal with a fine skin and glossy coat. -pendulous ears and Roman nose.  

IV. It is a cross breed between jamunapari x Nubian. 

V. Average milk yield in 3 – 4 kg/day. Peak yield may even go up to 6.5 kg or more.

VI. Bucks weight 65 – 80 kg and does from 50-60 kg.
