 1.Indigenous Dairy Breeds Of Cattles & Their Characteristic 

Indigenous Dairy Cattle breeds & Their Characteristic 
1. Sahiwal Breed of Cattle 
i. It is also as known as Lola (loose skin), Lambi Bar, Montgomery. Multani, Teli.ii. The average milk yield 1400 – 2500 kg /lactation. 

iii. First calving Age 37 to 48 months and calving interval 430 – 580 days.

2. Red sindhi Breed of Cattle 
i. It is also known as Red Karachi, Sindhi & Mahi
ii. Avg. yield 1700 kg of milk.
iii. First calving Age 39-50 months and inter calving period from 425-540 days.
3. Gir Breed of Cattle 
i. It is also known as Bhadawari, Desan. Gujarati, Kathiawari. Sorthi, and Surati.ii. It has Curved Horns (half moon).
iii. milk yield 1200-1800 kgs per lactation
iv. First calving Age 45-54 months and inter calving period 515 – 600 days.
4. Deoni Breed of Cattle 
i. It is also known as Dongerpati, Dongari, Wannera, Waghyd. Balankya, Shevera.ii. Milk yield ranges from 636 to 1230 kg/lactation & Caving interval 447 days.

1. Hariana Breed of Cattle 
i. Hariana has Small horn
ii. Yield of milk 600 to 800 kg / lactation.iii. First calving age 40 to 48 months and calving interval 480 to 630 days
2. Tharparkar Breed of Cattle 
i. It is also known as White Sindhi. Gray Sindhi and Thari.
ii. Cows yield 1800 to 2600 kg of milk/lactation.
iii. First calving age 38 to 42 months and inter calving period 430 – 460 days.
3. Kankrej Breed of Cattle 
i. It is also known as Wadad or Waged, Wadhiar,ii. Kankrej is famous for Sawai chal.
b. Yield of milk 1400 kg / lactation.
4. Ongole Breed of Cattle 
i. It is also known as Nellore.
ii. Milk yield 1000 kg/lactation.iii. First calving age 38 to 45 months and intercalving period is 470 days.
5. Krishna valley Breed of Cattle

Indigenous Draught breeds of cattle
1. Amritmahal Breed of Cattle 
i.  The muzzle. feat and tail are usually black.
ii. Horns are long and end in sharp black points.
2. Kangayam Breed of Cattle 
i. known as kongu and konganad.
ii. The eyes are dark and prominent with black rings around them.
iii. Coat is red at birth, but changes to grey at about 6 months of age.
3. Hallikar Breed of Cattle 
i. known for its draught capacity and especially for its trotting ability
ii. Long horns and strong legs
4. Bargur Breed of Cattle 
i. Known for their speed and endurance in trotting.
ii. Cautious in behaviour and tends to remain away from strangers.
5. Pulilalam Breed of Cattle 
i. known as Jallikattu madu. kidai madu, sentharai.
ii. Mainly used for penning in the field Useful for ploughing.
6. Umblachery Breed 
i. It is also known as Jathi madu, Mottai madu, Molai madu. Therkathi madu.
ii. Suitable for wet ploughing and known for their strength and sturdiness.

 4.Exotic Dairy Cattle Breeds & Their Characteristic 

Exotic dairy breeds of cattle
1. Holstein Friesian 
i. Largest dairy breed (mature weight 700 kg ) and typical marking of black and white
ii. Milk yield – 5800 to 6500 kg /lactation (Highest milk yield among the cattle)iii. Holstein Friesian milk has fat 3.45%
iv. First calving age 29 to 30 months and calving interval is 13 to 14 month.
2. Jersey Breed
i. Smallest of the dairy types of cattle.
ii. Milk fat 4.5% and 15% SNF. (fat % highest among exotic breed of cattle)
iii. Milk yield is 4500 kg/lactation.
iv. First calving age is 25 to 30 months and calving interval 13 to 14 months.
3. Ayrshire Breed 
i. It is also known as Dunlop cattle or Cunningham cattleii. Milk fat 4%
4. Brown Swiss 
i. Avg milk yield is 5000 kg/ lactation.ii. Milk fat contain 4%.
iii. First calving age 28 to 30 months and calving interval is 13 to 14 months.
5. Red dane 
i. Avg milk yield is 3000 to 4000 kg/ lactation.ii. Milk fat contain >4%.
iii. Weight of mature males up to 950 kg and mature female weight 600 kg.
iv. First calving age 28 to 30 months and calving interval is 13 to 14 months.
Cross breed – Dairy Cattle
1. Jersey cross 
i. The Jersey crosses may show 2 to 3 fold increase in milk yield in the first generation.ii.  Jersey crosses are suitable for tropical plains of our country.c
2. Holstein Friesian crosses 
i. The HF crosses are more suitable for cooler climatic regions like hilly areas as they are less tolerant to heat.
